In 1992, Martin Alonso and his partner Gloria Plaza Medina founded Viña Ilusión in the Rioja Baja subzone, where they farm 20 small plots across 12 acres. They make less than 3000 cases annually of organic Vino de Cosechero or "Grower Wine" that is unoaked, whole-bunch fermented and bottled with no added SO2. The young vine Rioja Ilusion is from a 5-hectare Tempranillo vineyard situated 700 metres above sea level in the Rioja Baja subzone. The grapes are hand-harvested and only wild yeasts are used during fermentation The wine is bottled with less than 35 ppm SO2 and is unoaked. Great on its own. Even better with grilled meats.
A clear, deep red in the glass with a purple hue. Abundantly perfumed aromas of raspberries, redcurrants, black pepper and liquorice. On the palate, mineral and smooth with subtle flavours of cassis and summer red fruits leading to a juicy, spicy finish. Great with roasted venison loin with prunes, rioja-style lamb and potatoes with chorizo or poached cod with garlic and tomato.
