Te Whare Ra (TWR) is a small winery located in the Marlborough sub-region of Renwick and is owned by Anna and Jason Flowerday. The 11-hectare vineyard which has has predominantly loam over clay soils, is one of the oldest in Marlborough, having been originally planted in 1979. Yields are kept low and the vineyard is managed with a combination of organic and biodynamic practices. The grapes are handpicked and hand-sorted and intervention from the wine makers is minimal. This lovely Sauvignon is from 3 vineyards based in Renwick and the Awatere Valley and 8% is raised in French oak.
A bright, light straw-yellow in the glass. A full nose of nettles, cut-grass and, yes, gooseberries. On the palate, refreshing and mouthwatering. Medium-bodied with a bright acidity leading to a crisp finish. Try with clams with spaghetti, saffron and leek, fennel and lemon crusted tuna skewers or Thai fishcakes.
