Mas Montel is to be found just outside the village of Asperes near Montpellier and is run by Dominique Granier. The terroir -Terre de Sommieres- is characterised by soils of limestone and flint that follows through into Dominique's wines, giving them an earthy aspect. 'La Petite Syrah' (a cross between Syrah and Peloursin a.k.a. Durif) is marvellously consistent with soft ripe fruit flavours to the fore.
Garnet red in colour, look for scents of stewed fruits, cinnamon and nutmeg. Uncomplicated on the palate, the red fruit flavours are backed up with notes of spice, leather and liquorice. Serve with mutton stew, braised stuffed lamb or Vacherin Mont d'Or cheese.
