Mas Foulaquier was founded in 1998 by Swiss architect, Pierre Jéquier. There are 11 hectares in total, 3 of which are owned by Pierre's business partner and fellow winemaker, Blandine Chauchet, who added her parcels of 50 year-old Carignan and Grenache vines in 2003. The estate is situated in the increasingly fashionable Pic Saint-Loup region, Languedoc's most northerly appellation, and all the wines are biodynamic. Calades, so-named after the limestone soils in which the vines grow, is a blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Grenache and is aged in oak barrels for 2 years. Spicy and robust, this makes for a great accompaniment to flavoursome meat or vegetable dishes.
An intense inky-purple in colour. Aromas of black cherry, blueberry and white pepper. On the palate, full-bodied and spicy with further dark fruit flavours. The forward acidity and lingering finish make this a great food wine. Try with Cassoulet, roast leg of lamb or lentil ragout.
