Situated at Sarrians, a tiny village to the south of Vacqueyras itself, the 55 hectare Domaine Montirius is run by 5th generation winemakers, Christine and Eric Saurell who farm biodynamically, having eventually converted in 1996 after 15 years of organic viticulture. This attractive and weighty red comes from a single 8 hectare plot - 'Le Clos' - situated just outside the village and is a blend of 50/50 Grenache and Syrah from 25 year old vines. Unusually for this part of the world, 'Clos Montirius' is unoaked as the Saurell's believe that additional tannins interfere with the natural minerality of their wines. Instead they use a process of micro-oxygenation to replicate the effect of oak barrels. The resulting wine is splendid. Perfect Sunday lunch material!
A dark ruby- red in colour. Aromas of blueberries, anise and lavender. On the palate, big, bold and generously aromatic with plenty of rich red berry fruit leading to a lengthy and spicy finish. Try with leg of venison with cider-baked apples, mutton and artichoke stew or a simple bowl of ratatouille.
