Domaine du Picatier is situated in the village of St Haon le Vieux in the Roannaise region of the upper Loire Valley and is the project of Christophe and Géraldine Pialoux, who took over the estate in 200. Christophe had previously studied at the lycée viticole in Beaune and worked extensively for Maison Drouhin. Of the couple's 7ha of vines, there is 1ha of 40-year-old Pinot Noir, and another 1ha devoted to Chardonnay; the rest is Gamay. The Pialoux practice natural methods in the cellar, using only indigenous yeast and no sulphur during fermentation, and are presently working towards biodynamic certification for their vineyards. For reasons of avoiding appellation strictures their wines are all bottled under the 'Vin de France' label. Gamenits is 100% Gamay and is vibrant and expressive. A great alternative to Beaujolais and a firm shop favourite. Serve cool.
A light ruby in colour. Scents of cherry and plum backed up with earthy notes. On the palate, light and refreshing with a tart acidity with a subtle bitter note on the finish. Try with braised partridge with lentils, ham and Swiss chard flan or veal kidneys cooked with cepes.
