The organically-grown vines of Domaine la Barroche are to be found on a hillside overlooking Chateauneuf-du-Pape, adjoining parcels owned by Chateau Rayas. The 12.5 hectare estate is run by the youthful Christian Barrot who assumed command in 2003 and has since developed the wines into some of the most sought-after in the region. Only red wines are made here from old vines grown on stony, limestone soils. All are AOC Chateauneuf-du-Pape and include the legendary 'Pure' made from 100% Grenache and one of only a handful of wines to have received 100 points from Robert Parker. The 'Signature' is a blend of 80% Grenache with a little Syrah and Cinsault and aged in Burgundy barrels for 18 months. The resulting wine, like all Christian's wines, is powerful and complex making it an ideal companion to hearty stews and roasts. Please note that stocks are limited.
A medium ruby-red in the glass. Gorgeous aromas of red cherries, blackberry, and tobacco with hints of blood orange. The palate is silky smooth with pure fruit flavours and a pronounced minerality. The balance between power and finesse is remarkable and the tannins supple yet discreet. Very reminiscent in fact of the wines of Chateau Rayas. Drink with a daube of lamb spiked with rosemary, sage and garlic, beef stew flavoured with anchovies or roast partridge with cabbage.
