Jean and Agnès Foillard took over Jean's family domaine in 1980. Most of their 14.5 hectares of vineyards are planted on the famed Côte du Py, a slope outside the town of Villié-Morgon made up of granite and schist soils and sitting on an alluvial fan at the highest point above the town, thereby imparting great complexity to the vines. From the outset Jean determined that he would return to the old practices of viticulture and vinification: starting with old vines, eschewing synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, adding little or no sulphur dioxide and refusing both chaptalization and filtration. The end result is a perfect expression of the local terroir - complex wines that avoid the bubblegum and banana of so many other Beaujolais'. This luscious red is aged in oak barrels for 9 months and is almost Burgundian in style.

An inky purple in colour. Brooding aromas of blackberry and dark cherry with notes of liquorice and forest floor. The palate is rich with flavours of plum and bilberry. The tannins are beautifully balanced and the acidity restrained. The wine finishes as rich and layered as it begins. A serious yet versatile Côte du Py. Try with a classic French onion soup, hot chicken livers with cream and tomato coulis or Jerusalem artichokes with walnuts.
