Domaine du Cros is situated in the hitherto little-known AOC of Marcillac in southwest France, to the north of Aveyron, and is run by 3rd generation winemaker Philippe Teulier. Marcillac achieved its AOC in 1990 and today there are just 70 producers spread over 150 hectares, growing mainly Fer Servadou grapes, known locally as Mansois. Other grapes allowed include Merlot, Gamay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Philippe farms his 25 hectares organically and has recently constructed a winery at the top of the Haut de Coteau above the vineyards setting it into the hillside so that gravity does the work of moving the juice from the press to the steel tanks below. As the name suggests, this particular red comes from old vines - average age 70 years - and is aged in a combination of oak and chestnut barrels for 12 months.

A vibrant purple in colour. Bright red fruit notes of cranberry and raspberry on the nose with hints of pepper and spices. On the palate, dry and concentrated with lovely vanilla notes from the oak. Smooth tannins leading to a mellow finish. Drink with chick-pea and sausage casserole, braised partridge with lentils or a ham and Swiss chard flan.
