Rasteau is one of the best villages in the southern Rhone Valley and although it holds an Appellation Rasteau Controlee for the sweet, grapey Vins Doux Naturels, none exists for the delicious reds so the village must append its name to that of Cotes-du-Rhone Villages. Domaine Charavin is to be found on the road to Vaison-la-Romaine and is run by the ambitious Didier Charavin. The estate has been in the family since the French Revolution and originally contributed to the local cooperative until Didier took the decision to concentrate on estate-bottled wines and with extremely successful results. The Rasteau Prestige is a blend of 65% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre and is expansive and rich.
A dark cherry-red in colour with an expressive nose of redcurrants and coffee beans with a touch of spice. The palate develops well in the glass to reveal flavours of plums and wild red fruits. The tannins are round and the finish is savoury and meaty. Excellent with rustic meat dishes. Try with roast saddle of hare with beetroot, shoulder of baby lamb with carrots, leeks and tomatoes or baked venison cutlets with juniper berries.
