Domaine d'Escausses is to be found in the village of Sainte-Croix in Gaillac and is run by Denis Balaran, 7th generation wine maker. There are 26 hectares under vine for AOC production and the estate specialises in growing traditional local grape varieties such as Mauzac, Braucol, Fer and Ondenc. There are also parcels of Syrah and Merlot. This juicy red is mainly Duras (75%) with a little Gamay and Braucol. Bright with peppery notes, this approachable red goes well with cold meats.
A deep violet in colour with aromas of cedarwood, white pepper and black plums backed up by hints of marjoram. Moderately full-bodied on the palate with supple tannins. Look for further flavours of dark red fruits and liquorice. The finish is lingering with spicy notes. Try with braised lamb shank, barbecued ribs or wild boar stew.
