In the ancient Occitan language of the Languedoc 'Fita' or 'Fitou' means frontier and indeed the region stands on the border of France and Catalonia. The extraordinary landscape guarantees a great diversity of terroir from schist to limestone to clay and this is where Carignan and Grenache rule the roost. Domaine de Roudene is situated in the pretty village of Paziols and is run by 3rd generation wine maker Jean-Pierre Faixo. The 27 hectare property is divided into 2 parcels situated in Fitou and Rivesaltes and each produce their own wine. This particular red is a blend of 50% Carignan, 30% Grenache and 20% Syrah. All the grapes are hand-harvested from low yields and enjoy a long maceration with the skins thereby extracting all the flavours.
A bright ruby-red in colour, look for complex aromas of redcurrants and raspberries with a touch of orange peel. Medium-bodied on the palate with excellent acidity and packed with further layers of black cherry and red fruits. Great with lamb chops, calf's liver in tomato sauce or braised duck with green olives.
