Monbazillac is the original French sweet wine appellation and is situated in the heart of Bergerac. The 42-hectare Domaine de l'Ancienne Cure is situated at Colombier just outside the town of Bergerac and is run by Christian Roche. Although made from the same grapes as Sauternes and Barsac to the north (Semillon, Sauvignon and Muscadelle), the terroir is completely different being much more mineral than gravel and giving up a sweeter, more powerful wine than its illustrious cousins in Bordeaux.
Golden yellow and concentrated in colour. On the nose aromas of honey, peaches and acacia. Unctious and full-textured on the palate with notes of crystallised fruits and apricots. An excellent dessert wine, very sweet and fresh with balanced acidity. The classic accompaniment to foie gras. Also great with blue cheese or tarte tatin.
