The Heraclio Alfaro winery is located in Rioja's Baja region, very close to the town of Alfaro itself. The winery is owned and operated by the Terras Gauda group based in Rias Baixas and famed for their wonderful Abarinos among others. There are 30 hectares of vines at the Heraclio Alfaro winery and the average age is 40 years. Garnacha Tinto is the main grape grown here with the addition of some Graciano and Tempranillo and all the grapes are hand-harvested. This particular red is predominantly Garnacha and is fermented in stainless steel tanks before ageing in French oak barrels for 12 months. With its vibrant acidity and spicy finish, this makes for a great food wine.
An intense cherry-red in colour. Scents of jammy red fruits and cassis with a touch of white spice. On the palate, concentrated and fresh with well integrated tannins and a smooth acidity leading to a spicy finish. Try with meatballs and tomato sauce (albondigas), barbecued rib-eye steak or sautéed wild mushrooms.
