The 15 hectare Clos Saint Michel is situated in the village of Sorgues on the road to Chateauneuf du Pape. Only 3 of the estate's 15 hectares cover AOC Chateauneuf du Pape, the remaining 12 hectares being turned over to AOC Cotes-du-Rhone production. The estate has been in the hands of the Mousset family for over 60 years and the business today is run by Franck Mousset alongside his brother, Olivier, both 4thgeneration wine makers. In addition, Francks' wife Murielle also owns the well regarded Domaine des Saumades in nearby Courthezon. Cuvee 'Mathilde' is a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah and is fermented in small oak vats. A warm and appealing wine.
A dark ruby in colour with aromas of cassis, liquorice and a touch of baking spices. In the mouth, jammy red fruit flavours abound with hints of black olives and oriental spices. Balanced acidity and elegant structure lead to a clean, lingering finish. Great with boudin noir with red cabbage, roast quail accompanied by lentils with bacon and snails or a chunk of bleu d'Auvergne cheese.
