Originally belonging to the Fonquerle family, Chateau Valcombe was purchased by respected Chateauneuf-du-Pape vigneron, Paul Jeune in 2000. After nearly a decade at the helm, Paul sold the estate to Luc and Cendrine Guenard in 2008, who continue to produce wines of impeccable balance and staying power. There are 36 hectares of vines grown in the shadow of Mont Ventoux at an altitude of 300 metres and everything is carried out organically. The average age of the vines is 55 years although there are parcels of Grenache and Carignan that are 80 years of age. 'Epicure' is a blend of 60% Grenache, 25% Carignan and 15% Syrah and is unoaked. Great with lamb shank or robust stews.
A deep garnet-purple in colour. Aromas of cassis, smoke and forest floor. On the palate, medium to full-bodied with layers of red and black fruit flavours. The acidity is balanced and the tannins subtle. Try with daube de boeuf aux carottes, rib of beef braised with tarragon, rosemary and fennel seeds or French onion soup.
