Founded in 1956 by Charles Verhaeghe, and now run by his sons Pascal and Jean-Marie, this biodynamic, 25-hectare domaine is one of the leading lights of Cahors. The wines are predominantly Malbec usually blended with a little Tannat or Merlot. Quality is the watchword and the aim is to compete with the New World Malbecs at their best. The superb Grand Cedre is from 50 year old Malbec vines situated on limestone scree and yields are very low at 15hl/ha. Following fermentation with minimal intervention by the winemaker, the wine is aged in 500-litre foudres for 28 months.

An inky purple in colour. Scents of blueberries, blackcurrants and violets. On the plate, full-bodied and powerful with complex, gamey notes. The tannins are forward but balanced and the finish lengthy suggesting further black fruit flavours. Drink with roast duck breast with black truffle cream sauce, cassoulet (naturally) or artichoke gratin.
