This organic estate is run by Valentina Passalacqua and is based at Apricena in Puglia's Gargano National Park. Wines have always been made organically on this 80-hectare estate, but after several years of production Valentina decided to isolate some plots of vines characterized by exclusively Kimmeridgian calcareous soil. Thus the 'Calcarius' project was born: terroir-driven, mineral wines from indigenous grape varieties such as Nero di Troia, Bombino, Greco and Negroamaro from which this smooth and lively red is made. Lightly chilled, this makes for a great aperitivo. The number on the label refers to the chemical element (calcium), its atomic number (20) and its atomic weight (40.08).
A dark ruby-red in the glass. An open nose of dark red berries and ripe plums with a touch of tobacco. On the palate, medium-bodied with balanced tannins and a mineral acidity. Great food wine! Try with grilled tuna steaks, penne pasta with a spicy arrabiata sauce or a chunk of Pecorino cheese.
