The Bodega was founded in 1999 by Rafa Bernabé and his wife Olga in the village of Villena in the heart of the sun-drenched Alicante region. The estate is now one of the area's most important wineries. Everything is organic and Rafa's focus on obscure and unusual grape varieties has set the benchmark for pinpoint, terroir-driven wines from the region. The various vineyards are comprised of chalky clay-calcareous soils, and are broken down into parcels by grape variety. Each parcel is treated differently in the cellar and no more than 3,000 bottles of each cuvee is produced. These are honest wines, free of artifice, that are joyful and delicious to drink. Acequion is made from single vineyard Zibbibo grapes (aka Muscat d'Alexandrie) and undergoes 15 days of skin contact. It is fermented in tinaja (large, pouros clay urns) then aged in bottle for 6 months. No additional sulphite is added and the wine is neither filtered nor fined.
A pale lemon in colour. Floral aromas of pink grapefruit and pear with a touch of spice. On the palate, light and fresh with a vibrant acidity and mineral backbone. Makes for a refreshing aperitif. Otherwise try with Thai larb, Jamon Iberico or a bowl of salted almonds.
