Bierzo is a remote region of northwest Spain located on the border of Galica and Castill y Leon and is considered by many to be the next 'big thing' in Spanish wine. The primary grape is the Mencia grape. Rarely grown anywhere else, Mencia delivers wines of incredible complexity but at a lower alcohol level. This makes them welcome in a world of increasingly muscular and powerful wines. Bodegas Pittacum itself is owned by the Terras Gauda operation and is situated in Argaza in the heart of Bierzo. Made from organic, hand-harvested Mencia grapes and from 75 year-old vines, this is a characterful red which sees 4 months in Amercian oak barrels. Complex yet elegant, this would pair well with grilled poultry.

Cherry-red in colour with a purple rim. Scents of cassis, liquorice and cocoa. On the palate, warm and concentrated with sweet tannins and balsamic hints. The finish is complex and lingering. Try with a tuna steak cooked with pimentos, Italian Stratiacella (egg soup with veal meatballs and spinach) or braised duck ragout.
