The mountainous and rugged wine region of Bierzo is situated in the province of León in northwest Spain and covers an area of 4,200 hectares divided between 55 vineyards. Virtually unheard of a decade ago, this former Roman mining area is now one of Spain's wine hotspots and Bodegas Pittacum one of its leading lights. The estate is owned by the Terras Gauda company and is situated in Arganza in the heart of Bierzo. 'Aurea' ('Golden Chain') is made entirely from the local Mencia grape from 70 year-old vines from a single organic 1-hectare vineyard called 'Areixol' situated 800 metres above sea level. After pressing, the juice undergoes malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels before being transferred to a second batch of new French oak barrels for a further 14 month ageing period.

An intense maroon in colour with a violet rim. A concentrated and elegant nose of red fruits, cocoa, roasted coffee and toffee with a balsamic backdrop. On the palate, full-bodied and well-structured. Very flavoursome and complex with a good weight of fruit and pronounced yet balanced tannins. The excellent acidity promises a long-lasting future. Great with vegetarian caldo gallego, (white bean soup), spicy grilled shrimp stew or chorizo and sage stuffed roast partridge.
