In the last 30 years Ribera del Duero has emerged from almost nowhere to challenge Rioja for the crown as Spain's greatest wine region. Once known only as the home Vega Sicilia and Tinto Pesquera, it now boasts numerous bodegas of outstanding quality including the excellent Bodegas Fuentenarro. The estate is owned by the Pérez-Garcia family and was founded in 2002. The winery is located at La Horra, Burgos in the heart of Ribera del Duero, and the wines are from family owned vineyards. Only Tempranillo (known locally as Tinta del Pais) is grown on the estate, the youngest of the vineyards is 20 years old and the oldest 70 years. Production is limited and the wines are aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels. As the name suggests, this particular red spends 4 months in (American) oak barrels.

A bright ruby in colour with shades of violet. On the nose, notes of redcurrant, blueberry and plum with hints of vanilla. On the palate, creamy and smooth in texture with further red and black fruit notes. Medium bodied with sweet tannins, this is a well structured wine showing great ageing potential. Great with a salad of ham, pears and Manchego cheese, braised ribs with confit potatoes and crispy leeks or Chilindron stew of venison, roasted red peppers, paprika and pancetta.
