Angel Rodriguez farms 25 hectares in Rueda in the Castilla y Leon department of north west Spain and is said to produce the best wines in the region. The estate has been in the family since 1794 and Angel is credited with the single-handed revival of the indigenous Verdejo grape which has been grown in the area since the 11th century but became almost extinct in the 1970's. Martinsancho is a single-vineyard that was planted with Verdejo in 1976, the vines from cuttings taken from a one-acre site of pre-phylloxera vines which has been cultivated since the 17th century. Today, the origins of most of the Verdejo vineyards in Rueda can be traced back to Martinsancho cuttings and for his work Angel was recently honoured by King Juan Carlos of Spain. This particular Verdejo is floral and aromatic and pairs well with spicy seafood dishes.

A pale yellow in colour with green flecks. On the nose, scents of pear, stone-fruit and honey. On the palate, stone and orchard fruit with some citrus and notes of tropical fruit. The finish is mineral with salty hints. A very approachable and food-friendly wine. Try with grilled swordfish and a green herb salsa, steamed fillet of sea bass on a bed of fennel with tarragon sauce or spiced clams with chilli, ginger, turmeric and lots of crusty bread!
