Ampeleia (meaning 'vines' in Greek) is the work of Elisabetta Foradori, one of Italy's "superstar" winemakers - famous for her work with Teraldego in the Alto Adige - in collaboration with two friends, Giovanni Podini and Thomas Widmann. Together they have developed a unique project in the Maremma region of Tuscany, farming biodynamically to produce fresh, elegant and silky wines. The estate overlooks the medieval village of Roccatederighi and the vines are located on three different levels at altitudes of between 200 and 600 metres above sea level. There are 40 hectares of mainly young vines all sloping down to the sea and hidden among the lush vegetation, Grapes grown include the local Sangiovese plus other international grape varieties including Grenache, Carignano, Mourvedre, Alicante and Cabernet Franc. 'Carignano' is 100% Carignano from vines grown 250 metres above sea level. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with natural yeasts and ageing takes place in concrete tanks for 8 months. The resulting wine is a true reflection of its terroir.
A deep ruby-red in colour with aromas of black cherries, blueberries and figs. On the palate, fresh and smooth with notes of sweet spices and red fruits. Silky in texture with balanced tannins and a solid mineral backbone leading to a lengthy and refreshing finish. Great accompaniment to grilled chicken with thyme and rosemary served on a bed of rocket, Tuscan lamb and beef stew or a mature hard goat's cheese.
