Alfredo Maestro began to make wine in the late 1990's when he planted his first vineyard, Almate, on the Rio Duraton near his native town of Penaflel in the Ribera del Duero. From the begining everything was carried out strictly according to organic principles, but in 2003 Alfredo began to make natural wines containing absolutely no chemicals or added sulphites. Over the years the estate has grown to its current size of 9 hectares with the purchase of a number of abandoned or neglected vineyards around the Ribera del Duero. Now he is known as 'The Magician of the Duero' and is currently acknowledged as one of the most innovative and dynamic natural winemakers in Spain. The Valdecastrillo Tinto is 100% Tempranillo from grapes grown at 1000m above sea level in nearby Segiovia and is aged in French oak barrels for 12 months.

A dark ruby red in the glass. Aromas of ripe black fruits stand out against a spicy backdrop with further notes of chocolate and toasted nuts. On the palate, earthy, rustic and spicy with a fresh acidity leading to a lingering finish. Great with ham, rocket, pear and blue cheese salad, Pumpkin soup with chorizo, smoked bacon and broccoli or braised ribs of beef with confit potatoes.
