Based in Madiran in southwest France, Alain Brumont (a.k.a. 'Monsieur Madiran') runs five estates in the region, of which the biodynamically-run Chateau Montus is perhaps the most important. Founded in 1979 the first Montus vintage was released in 1983 and was an instant success. The estate has gradually expanded over the years and now covers 80 hectares of mainly gravel soil. This particular Montus is 80% Tannat, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and is aged in oak barrels for 12 months, 20% of which are new. Powerful and full-bodied, this is not a wine for the faint-hearted and is best served with hearty roasts or stews.

Great depth of colour in the glass, almost black. Earthy aromas of blackcurrants, prunes, liquorice and coffee. Complex layers of black fruit flavours with notes of mint and herbs all underpinned by forward tannins and excellent acidity. Excellent with 'big' foods such as cassoulet, coq au vin or roast boar with wild mushrooms.
