Pago de Tharsys is a 12-hectare estate based at Requena, some 70 miles inland from Valencia on Spain's eastern coast. The vineyards are located on the plateau above Requena, 650 metres above sea level and face south and are planted in poor sandy soil with excellent drainage. The continental climate means that summers are hot and dry and winters are cold with occasional rains. Perfect for the cultivation of the various grape varietals grown at the estate which include Macabeo, Chardonnay, Albariño and the native Bobal from which this spicy red is made (with the addition of a splash of Cabernet Franc). Its robust acidity and silky tannins make for a complex and age-worthy red.
A dark violet in the glass. On the nose, dark chocolate and dried berries. On the palate, juicy and fruity with notes of plums and figs. Bobal's thick skins contribute forward tannins and a vibrant acidity. The finish is lingering and spicy. Drink with a traditional Valencian paella, roasted rabbit loin or a chargrilled sirloin steak.
