Based in Madiran in southwest France, Alain Brumont (a.k.a. 'Monsieur Madiran') runs five estates in the region, of which the biodynamically-run Chateau Bouscasse is one of the most important. The estate comprises 50 hectares of superb clay and limestone soils along the cliff in the commune of Maumusson-Laguian. The slope is known locally as the Pied de Côte de Saint Emilion ("The Foot of the Saint Emilion Slope"), because the Tannat grown there produces wines that possess similar characteristics to some of the great wines of Bordeaux's right bank. The Vieilles Vignes is 100% Tannat from 50 year-old old vines and spends some time in new oak barrels. Full-bodied and spicy and although drinking now, this will benefit from a further 3-5 years in the cellar.

An almost opaque purple in the glass. A powerful and spicy nose of earthy black fruits. Full-bodied yet smooth in texture with further expressive flavours of cassis and black plums. A lengthy finish and pronounced acidity make this a great food wine. Try with rib of beef with a shallot and red wine sauce, oxtail braised in red wine or medaillons of venison served with apples and blackcurrants.
