Based in Madiran in southwest France, Alain Brumont (a.k.a. 'Monsieur Madiran') runs five estates in the region, of which the biodynamically-run Chateau Bouscasse is one of the most important. The estate comprises 50 hectares of superb clay and limestone soils along the cliff in the commune of Maumusson-Laguian. The slope is known locally as the Pied de Côte de Saint Emilion ("The Foot of the Saint Emilion Slope"), because the Tannat grown there produces wines that possess similar characteristics to some of the great wines of Bordeaux's right bank. This particular red is a bend of mainly Tannat with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from old vines.

A clear ruby in the glass. An intense nose of ripe plums, black cherries and dark chocolate. In the mouth, dry with a medium acidity and forward tannins. Look for further dark fruit notes leading to a lingering finish. Drink now or keep for a further 5-7 years. Try with Cassoulet, duck confit or a chunk of Roquefort cheese.
