The de Martino Family have been making wine in Chile's Maipo Valley for 70 years and their vineyards are situated at altitudes of up to 825m above sea level, yet only 30 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The soils are made up of clay, sand and volcanic rock which in turn imparts a very distinct character to the wines. Everything is organic, yields are low and quality control ruthless. The Legado brand showcases specific varietals from some of the best wine growing terroirs of Chile, resulting in wines that express the true character of each region. This excellent hand-harvested Syrah comes from the 30-hectare Norte Verde vineyard, situated only 28 miles from the Pacific Ocean and at an altitude of 800 metres above sea level. The soils are rich in clay, sand, and volcanic rock giving up a minerality not usually associated with Syrah. Following a lengthy maceration and malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in used French oak barrels for 12 months before bottling.
A dark ruby-red in colour. Intense cherry aromas on the nose with notes of chocolate leading to a rich and velvety mouthfeel. Soft tannins and persistent mineral notes make this an excellent food wine. Balanced and fresh with good mineral qualities, the oak aging adds complexity to the fruit and the tannins are beautifully integrated. Drink with lamb chops and a balsamic reduction, Cajun-style red beans and rice with andouille sausages or roast pheasant with celeriac and bacon.
