Legend has it that as the 2nd son of a prosperous land owning family over a century ago, it was expected that Brookford's founder, Josiah Copeland should become a priest. However Josiah had other ideas and turned to vine rather than the cross. He planted vines in Murrumbidgee, named after the river that flows through the Riverina, New South Wales`s largest grape growing area. In the early part of the last century there was a large influx of Italian immigrants to Riverina, bringing vinicultural and viticultural skills from their homeland. Today Riverina has some of the most modern wineries in Australia employing the very latest techniques in winemaking. This particular red from Josiah's Brookford Estate is a juicy blend of 85% Shiraz and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon from 15 year old vines grown on loam soil. Great with beef or lamb.
A dark plum in colour. On the nose, scents of cranberry, cinnamon and cloves with hints of spearmint and rosemary. Medium bodied on the palate with generous notes of chocolate, mocha, cassis and blackberry. Look for notes of sage and sandal wood. The finish is lingering and spicy. Great with a bowl of grilled Mediterranean vegetables, chorizo and rocket pizza or baked figs.
